Xanaia, the 7 yr old purebred Lusitano mare, owned by Sussex Lusitanos and ridden by Leila Rahmatallah, won the Iberian Ridden Class at the New Forest Show on 28th July.
This is Xanaia's first showing season under saddle - she and Leila went on to win the Ridden Lusitano Mares Class at the BAPSH Show, Hartpury on 31st July and also the Reserve Lusitano Championship at the same show.
Xanaia is bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares. Her sire is APSL Stallion of Merit and European Working Equitation Champion 'Iberico' (by Cartaz) and her dam is 'Nata' (by Embaixador). She joins a successful string of Lusitano horses in the UK, all bred by the Coudelaria Romao Tavares Stud and owned by Sussex Lusitanos, including Numerario, Quota and Morena.

 The Lusitano Classes at Royal Windsor Horse Show on 16th May witnessed the largest and highest standard ever seen at this Show - well done to everyone! Special congratulations are due in particular to the class winners : SONETO (English Dress - 21 entries), owned by Alan Eustance and ridden by Marcia Wakeman, and TRIGUEIROS (Portuguese Dress - 17 entries) owned and ridden by Justine Jevon. The judge of both classes was Peter Maddison Greenwell and Sussex Lusitanos were the proud sponsors of the Portuguese Dress Class. The Portuguese riding cloak, kindly offered by "O Mundo da Equitacao" to the Best Dressed Rider in the Portuguese Class, was awarded to Lois Beckett, riding RUBI.
Lusitanos were victorious in the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix - French driver, Francois Dutilloy won the Horse Pairs with purebred Lusitanos QONWENTO and REVISOR, belonging to the Monte da Ravasqueira stud.
The Sussex Lusitanos stand was busy throughout the week, a testament to the high level of interest in the Lusitano breed - Lusitano mares Quota and Xanaia were our "equine ambassadors" in the trade stand show stable.
At an end-of-show reception, representatives of Sussex Lusitanos were honoured to meet HM The Queen and the HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, both of whom expressed their interest in the Lusitano and delight at the breed's involvement at Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle, the Show provides an ideal venue to promote the Lusitano horse.  Francisco Bessa de Carvalho, Senior Rider of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, will be giving a training clinic at Wedgewood Farm, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, on 29th - 31st January 2010.
Horses and riders of all levels will participate, all of whom are eagerly looking forward to benefitting from from Francisco's immense experience. Most horses on this clinic will be Lusitanos; however there will also be native breeds and Warmbloods.

 This year's Golega Fair Organised Trip takes place on 10th - 15th November. Now in its 19th consecutive year, this trip has introduced hundreds of visitors from the UK and other countries eg. USA, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Denmark, to the extraordinary sights and sounds of Portugal's most famous equestrian event. The Fair showcases dressage, working equitation, driving, breed classes and displays by the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and the Leziria Grande Equestrian Centre. Lusitano breeders display their horses in their pavilions, and the streets are lined with shops and restaurants.

 Sussex Lusitanos provided 10 entertaining demonstrations over 6 days at the Alltech FEI Jumping and Dressage Championships, Windsor on 25th – 30th August. Emphasizing the versatilty of the Lusitano, the displays included dressage, Portuguese equitation, English showing, working equitation and endurance. The riders were Tori Peter (RH, Sueste), Malcolm Hunt and Suzanne Holt (QB), Marcia Wakeman (Tostao, Quilate), Sherene Rahmatallah (Quota), Leila Rahmatallah (Numerario, Venturoso), Holly Barber (Rafa), Natasha Read (Xerife) and Jenny Myerscough (Venturoso Repoula). Well known international dressage trainer John Lassetter made guest appearances on 2 days, delighting the crowds with his mini teach-in sessions with Leila Rahmatallah and Numerario. The “icing on the cake” for the Lusitanos at Windsor was an invitation , at short notice, from the organisers for 6 of our riders to open the Gala Evening on Friday 28th August, and to escort the VIP open-top Range Rover carrying Muhammad Ali and Henry Cooper on their lap of honour around the Castle Arena.  The Sussex Lusitanos stud stallion Numerario (by Embaixador, bred by Manuel Francisco Romao Tavares) took the Lusitano Championship for the 5th successive time at this year’s Suffolk Show on May 28th. Described last year as “an extremely good stallion”, this year’s judges, Frederico Saramago and Joao Quintas, agreed and awarded Numerario the Arnold Smith Trophy for the Best In Hand Lusitano at the Show. In the youngstock class, Sussex Lusitanos again took the top ribbons with their 3 yr old filly, Bandarilha (by Mosaico, bred by Aldo Machado Gouveia).

 Despite the typically changeable British weather the Sussex Lusitanos stand at Royal Windsor Horse Show (13th - 17th May) welcomed large numbers of visitors all week. The 2 bay Lusitano horses on the stand were an added attraction and drew lots of attention to the breed.
There was successful in the show ring also - in the Ridden Lusitanos in Portuguese Dress (sponsored by Sussex Lusitanos) our 2 bay horses, Quota and Venturoso, were placed 3rd and 6th. Winner of this class was Quebre Nozes, ridden by Helen Barlow, and Quilate, ridden by Marcia Wakeman won the Ridden Class in English Dress (sponsored by Blazepoint Ltd)

 Sussex Lusitanos will have a double presence at this year's Royal Windsor Horse Show on 13th - 17th May. The Sussex Lusitanos Stand will be at the Show for the 5 days and Sussex Lusitanos are also proud to be sponsoring the Lusitano (Portuguese Dress) Class on Sunday 17th May (Copper Arena). The Show takes place in lovely surroundings of Home Park, the private gardens of Windsor Castle and features top class dressage, showjumping, driving and showing.  The 2009 European Working Equitation Championships will be held on 25th - 28th June at the Feira da Cavalo, Ponte de Lima, in the north of Portugal. Teams from several countries will compete, including Spain, Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Austria and others.

 Over 70 UK visitors enjoyed 5 days of blue skies and countless images of Lusitano horses at this year's Golega Horse Fair, which took place on 10th - 16th November.
In the Lusitano classes, Afonso Henriques (Coudelaria Monte Velho) won the Class for 3 yr old Colts, and Zimbro (Coudelaria Vaz Torres) won the Class for 4 yr old Stallion and was crowned Overall Champion Lusitano of the Fair.
A highlight for the UK visitors was the day visit to the Romao Tavares Stud in the Alentejo.

 Portugal, Brazil and Australia will be sending 7 purebred Lusitanos to the forthcoming Olympics to compete in dressage. The Portuguese dressage team will comprise 3 Lusitanos : Notavel JCL Puy du Fou (Carlos Pinto), Galopin de la Font (Daniel Pinto), and Oxalis de Meia Lua (Miguel Nuno Duarte). The Brazilian dressage team will also comprise 3 Lusitanos :Oceano do Top (Leandro Silva), Nilo VO (Rogerio Clementino) and Samba (Luiza Tavares de Almeida). In aditional Hayley Beresford, a member of the Australian dressage team, will partner the purebred Lusitano Relampago do Retiro. We wish them all every success!

 The grey stallion Numerario (Embaixador x Bailarina, bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares) was crowned Overall Supreme Champion Lusitano at the Suffolk Show on 29th May. This is the 4th time Numerario has won this title. French judge Philippe Lautier described him as "a very good horse". The 2 yr old filly Bandarilha, bred by Aldo Machado Gouveia and owned by Roger Barnett won the Purebred Youngstock Class. The Purebred Ridden Class was won by Holly Barber riding Rafa, and the Parade Horse Class went to Marcia Wakeman riding Tostao. Full results will appear on www.suffolkshow.co.uk

 The Italian Equestrian Federation has announced that the 2008 European Working Equitation Championships will be held on 10th - 12th October at the Horse Country Centre, nr Arborea, Sardinia.
Great Britain will be represented by a team of riders. Other participating countries will include Spain, Portugal, Italy and France.
The Horse Country Centre, Sardinia has superb equestrian facilities; it hosted the 2006 European Junior Working Equitation Championships.

 Portuguese rider/trainer Paulo Motta lost his battle against cancer and passed away on 3rd February 2008. We extend our condolences to his wife, Sofia and their 3 daughters.

 Six Lusitanos and their riders travelled from Portugal to take part in the Centenary Finale at Olympia on 17th - 22nd December. Riders David Duarte Oliveira, Ricardo Moura Tavares, Paulo Santos, Miguel Fonseca, Bruno Rodrigues de Silva and David Gomes rode 11 displays in total - they were dressed in brightly coloured 17th century bullring jackets. The display was co-ordinated by Sussex Lusitanos. During the Show the team were honoured to meet Camilla, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and also HRH The Princess Royal.
