The Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art   (www.realescuela.org)

The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art (Fundacion Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre) was founded in 1973 by Don Alvaro Domecq Romero. The School is known all over the world, in particular for the School’s equestrian show "How the Andalusian Horses Dance" – a unique exhibition of classical horsemanship. The School has 140 horses which, since 1983, live in the stables of Don Pedro Domecq de la Riva. There is a wonderful collection of nineteen horse-drawn carriages and their harness, some dating back to 1730, along with saddles and embroidery for horses and coachmen - all pieces of incalculable historical value.
The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is committed to preserving the ancestral abilities of the Andalucian horse, maintaining the classical traditions of Baroque horsemanship, preparing horses and riders for international dressage competitions, and providing an education in all aspects of horsemanship. The team of Senior Instructors at the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art include Olympic dressage riders Rafael Soto and Ignacio Rambla, members of the Spanish National Dressage Team. It is one of four major classical institutions and is well-known for the "Dancing Stallions" of its equestrian show.

Riding Lessons at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art

Individual riding lessons on these holidays take place inside the Recreo de las Cadenas Palace, the magnificent home of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Lessons comprise individual tuition with a School Instructor on one of the schoolmaster stallions. This is the first time ever that the Royal School has offered lessons on a short term basis. Each holiday date can take a maximum of 6 riders. Lessons are available to intermediate level riders ie. minimum experience of movements found at medium level dressage.  Details of the rider’s experience are required at the time of booking. Riders can choose either 4 or 5 lessons in total. Non-riders  are very welcome to join these holidays. Carriage driving lessons are also available at the School – further details on request.

Below are personal reports from 2 people on the March 2013 trip:

’’The Royal School is  a model of perfection from the horses’ point of view. There are five main stable blocks radiating out from a covered path around the outside of the octagonal tack room.  Only stallions are kept here, they can all “talk” to each other through the bars on three side of their boxes, and  obviously have a happy communal existence.  One of the blocks housed the “stars” including Invasor, who earned his rider Rafael Soto and Spain a silver medal in the Athens Olympics. He has true star quality and is still worked every day.All the horses were in top condition, and beautifully schooled & very responsive  For anyone fancying this trip  I can highly recommend every aspect of this trip of a lifetime.’’
Jenny Myerscough, South Wales

“I wanted the “wow experience”.  Watching the masters at work schooling the young horses gave me enormous insight into the athletisism required to achieve the training.   It was such an honour to be able to watch the riders and horses. All the instructors were hospitable and friendly and we felt very welcome.   The horses were truly statuesque - so inspiring and exciting.  If you ride an Iberian horse – don’t miss it.’’
